Moroccan authorities detained over 100 individuals on Saturday as they attempted to enter Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa. The heightened security measures were in response to social media calls for another mass migrant crossing, following a recent surge of over 72,000 migrants into Ceuta, leading to EU tensions and anti-immigration sentiments.
The detained group comprised 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens apprehended in or near Fnideq, the city facing Ceuta. Moroccan police utilized tear gas to disperse migrant gatherings near the border, while Spanish soldiers safeguarded supermarkets and police patrolled Ceuta’s streets vigilantly.
In response to the situation, Madrid reinforced security by deploying additional personnel and installing a maritime barrier. The Interior Ministry emphasized the temporary nature of these reinforcements and the intention to prevent similar incidents in the future. Currently, about 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, with plans to repatriate those who entered irregularly.
Authorities in both Morocco and Spain implemented strict measures to deter further border crossings, including increased security checks and surveillance. Despite these efforts, some sub-Saharan migrants managed to evade checkpoints by taking alternative routes towards Fnideq.
Individuals who previously crossed into Ceuta discouraged others from attempting the dangerous journey, emphasizing the hardships and lack of benefits. The orchestrated mass crossings, organized by groups in Fnideq, aimed to leverage numbers for a perceived strength in unity.
