A Food Basics store will soon take the place of a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood, leading to the displacement of numerous employees. Metro Inc. announced that the closure of the store, which occurred on Wednesday, is part of a strategic move to align with the specific demands of the local market.
According to a company spokesperson, the decision to transition to a discount banner like Food Basics was influenced by factors such as market conditions and customer preferences. Despite this rationale, the news came as a surprise to the employees at the Southgate Metro location.
Justin Braganza, a long-time meat cutter at the store, expressed shock over the abrupt closure announcement made by regional management in May. The explanation provided was that rising rent costs and insufficient store profitability under the Metro model necessitated the termination of all staff members.
While Metro emphasized that the change was driven by market dynamics, not rent expenses, the 72 employees at the Southgate Metro will not have the option to transfer to other Metro outlets. Instead, they are encouraged to apply for positions at the upcoming Food Basics store, where a minimum number of former Metro Southgate employees will be hired based on the collective agreement terms.
Despite the potential job opportunities at the new store, employees like Braganza remain uncertain about their future, especially considering the differences in wage structures between Metro and Food Basics. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for its members affected by the closure, including severance benefits and job prospects at the incoming Food Basics store.
Legal experts have pointed out the potential for grievances and legal challenges regarding the closure and rebranding of the store, emphasizing the importance of fair treatment and due process for the affected employees. Amidst the uncertainty, employees like Braganza are left grappling with the sudden disruption to their work lives and the close-knit community they will soon leave behind.
