A British sociologist, Jason Arday, who recently resigned from the University of Cambridge amid allegations of plagiarism and media scrutiny, was discovered deceased on Friday. Arday, who became Cambridge’s youngest Black professor in 2023 at the age of 37, stepped down following intense media pressure regarding accusations of plagiarism in his academic work and questions surrounding his athletic and fundraising achievements.
Reports from The Times, Telegraph, BBC, and Sky News stated that Arday, aged 41, was found “unresponsive” in a residence in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon. His family, in a statement released by his publisher, Simon & Schuster U.K., expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of Arday, describing him as a loving father, partner, brother, uncle, and son.
The family highlighted the distress caused by what they referred to as a campaign of misinformation that led to Arday’s resignation. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the death of a 41-year-old man in Battersea, stating that the circumstances were unexpected but not suspicious.
Cambridge vice-chancellor Deborah Prentice expressed deep sadness at the news, offering sympathies to Arday’s family and friends during this difficult time. U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham described Arday’s passing as a tragedy, emphasizing the importance of reflecting on the events that led to this outcome.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan and former Conservative home secretary James Cleverly also weighed in on the situation, with Cleverly raising concerns about academic institutions’ roles in the matter. Arday, in his resignation statement as a sociology of education professor, cited the toll of public accusations and commentary on himself and his loved ones.
While denying plagiarism allegations, Arday acknowledged making errors during his doctoral studies. Supporters defended him against what they perceived as a smear campaign, emphasizing his personal journey overcoming challenges such as dyslexia and developmental delays. Cambridge initiated an investigation into Arday’s qualifications, following public scrutiny and calls for an independent inquiry into his appointment.
