“Renowned Horticulturist Monty Don’s Tips to Support Wildlife in Autumn”

As summer fades and the days grow shorter, wildlife faces challenges with diminishing food sources and shelter as vegetation thins out in autumn. While many garden enthusiasts are busy tending to their gardens in preparation for winter, renowned horticulturist Monty Don suggests a simple yet effective way to support struggling creatures during this time.

The vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow leaves falling to the ground in October create a picturesque scene. Instead of immediately clearing them away, Monty advises leaving the fallen leaves undisturbed to provide a cozy refuge for wildlife seeking warmth and protection during the colder months.

In his seasonal gardening tips, Monty Don emphasizes the importance of creating spaces under hedges and trees with piles of leaves, logs, and prunings to offer essential winter shelter for hedgehogs, frogs, small mammals, and insects. For those without storage space, constructing a leaf bay using posts and chicken wire can serve as a suitable alternative.

As Bonfire Night approaches, caution is advised to check woodpiles carefully before lighting fires to prevent harm to hedgehogs seeking shelter. Additionally, The Woodland Trust recommends building bug hotels with natural materials like leaves, twigs, bark, and pine cones to support vital insects in the ecosystem.

In the face of plummeting temperatures, birds require assistance in finding food and staying warm. Providing nuts, seeds, and unfrozen water sources, such as bird baths with a small ball to prevent ice formation, can be life-saving for our feathered friends during the harsh winter months.
