“Eye Drop Poisoner Sentenced to Life Behind Bars”

A woman convicted of lethally poisoning her longtime partner with eye drops faces spending the rest of her life in prison after her deceitful scheme was uncovered.

Marcy L. Oglesby, 53, has been imprisoned for slowly killing her significant other, Richard “Rick” Young, a former police chief, and callously observing his suffering before hiding his body in a storage unit. She has been handed a 50-year sentence for murder and aggravated battery, with credit given for 326 days spent in pretrial detention.

This verdict marks the conclusion of a turbulent legal journey that began when Oglesby murdered Young in the fall of 2021. The prosecution lamented during the sentencing hearing that she not only took the life of a man who had loved and cared for her for nearly three decades but also administered poison and witnessed his agony.

The grim discovery of Young’s remains in a storage unit in Maquon, Illinois, on October 7, 2022, revealed the heinous crime. Legal complications initially clouded the case as Oglesby was initially charged only with concealing a non-homicidal death. The charges were later upgraded to murder and aggravated battery, leading to a convoluted legal battle with multiple twists and turns.

Detective Gregory Jennings of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Karen Doubet, who lived with the couple, initially misled investigators regarding the body. Eventually, Doubet confessed that Oglesby had tainted Young’s meals and coffee with eye drops and crushed medication over a prolonged period.

Subsequent investigations uncovered a significant number of discarded eye drop bottles, a pill crusher, and incriminating receipts at the couple’s residence in January 2023. This evidence, along with witness testimonies, played a crucial role in the conviction of Oglesby, who persistently denied her involvement in the poisoning.

Despite her claims of innocence, the court found Oglesby guilty after a bench trial, highlighting the meticulous planning and execution of the crime. Oglesby’s protestations of innocence during her sentencing further underscored the callousness of her actions and the devastating consequences for her victim.
