Tragedy Strikes: Mother Dies After Consuming Tainted Margarita

A mother of three has tragically passed away two years after consuming a margarita cocktail that was reportedly tainted with “industrial cleaner.”

Holly Hill, aged 30, was out on a Valentine’s Day date at a Mexican bar in 2023 when she unknowingly took a sip of the margarita.

Shortly after tasting the drink, Holly hurried to the restroom feeling unwell. “Her mouth felt like it was on fire, and she sensed something was wrong,” recounted her mother, Kelly Hunter, to News 9.

“She immediately got up and rushed to the bathroom, started vomiting, and rinsed her mouth with water.” Holly’s family alleged that her second margarita that evening contained “industrial cleaning solution.”

The purportedly harsh chemical caused severe damage to Holly’s throat and esophagus, leading her to undergo multiple procedures over the course of two years.

Her mother mentioned that while the “hole in her esophagus was not completely healed, it had improved and was less inflamed.”

Holly required tube feeding and was preparing for a swallow study. Unfortunately, complications arose, and she tragically passed away last Thursday.

Just before her passing, Holly had undergone another surgery, but her condition suddenly deteriorated. “As they were preparing to move her, she lost her pulse,” her mother shared.

A tribute to Holly, a beloved teacher at Elgin Public Schools, highlighted her perseverance during a challenging medical journey while continuing to teach and care for her family over the past two and a half years.

A school colleague described the loss of Holly as “unfathomable,” emphasizing her dedication as a teacher, Elgin alumni, and cherished mother and wife.

Holly’s family holds Hacienda Las Margaritas Bar & Grill in Elgin, Oklahoma, accountable, having filed a lawsuit against them before reaching a confidential settlement earlier this year.

Kelly, Holly’s mother, expressed the family’s desire for accountability, stating, “We want them to take responsibility for causing my daughter’s death; because they did. It may have been a lengthy battle, but ultimately, they are to blame.”

Authorities have initiated a criminal investigation. Acting Elgin Police Chief Ralph Parsons disclosed that the department, in coordination with the Comanche County District Attorney, requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to lead the inquiry, as reported by The Sun.

Parsons mentioned that state investigators will commence an initial inquiry, with support from the Elgin Police Department, into the incident.

While the restaurant has not issued a statement regarding Holly’s demise, they posted a message on social media in May 2023, expressing regret over the incident and acknowledging it as a unique and regrettable occurrence in their ten-year history.

Holly’s family remains resolute in seeking justice. Kelly emphasized, “The most important thing we want at this stage is to raise awareness about what transpired at that establishment and to stop supporting them.”
