Police on high alert for potential synagogue attacks

Police are vigilant for potential imitations of terror attacks targeting the Jewish Sabbath following a tragic incident at a synagogue in Manchester where two individuals lost their lives. The perpetrator, Jihad Al-Shamie, drove his vehicle into bystanders before launching a knife assault on worshippers at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Crumpsall. He was fatally shot within seven minutes of the emergency call to authorities.

The victims, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, were fatally wounded, while three others sustained severe injuries. The attack occurred during a gathering at the synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

In response to the incident, Keir Starmer pledged to enhance police presence at synagogues nationwide to ensure the safety of the Jewish community. The Community Security Trust (CST) is collaborating with law enforcement to strengthen security measures at synagogues and within the Jewish community, urging people not to gather outside communal sites and advising synagogues to keep their doors closed at all times.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced increased patrols around synagogues in the capital to reassure Jewish worshippers of their safety with the deployment of additional police officers. Additionally, counter-terrorism units and security services are concerned about potential copycat attacks at synagogues.

Following the Manchester incident, New York police have heightened their presence outside synagogues, particularly during the Jewish Sabbath period. Shabbat, a time for family gatherings, communal worship, and shared meals, will see an increased police presence as worshippers attend on Saturday.

Rabbi Jonathan Romain expressed heightened concerns within the Jewish community stemming from recent tensions, including the Hamas attacks and Israel’s military actions in Gaza. He emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent political violence from escalating into religious animosity.

The tragic events have deepened fears among many Jews, with concerns that political conflicts may breed religious hatred. The incident has underscored the need for continued efforts to prevent external conflicts from affecting local communities.
