A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, yet guitarist Paul Langlois still grapples with the experience. Reflecting on the milestone, Langlois expressed disbelief that ten years have flown by since the iconic show that deeply resonated with fans. The emotional farewell at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, marked the poignant moment when lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to the band’s devoted followers, delivering heartfelt renditions of classics like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time.
Following their formation in 1984, The Tragically Hip, renowned for their 13 studio albums, embarked on their final tour in 2016, culminating in the hometown finale on August 20 of the same year. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, sadly led to his passing just over a year later at the age of 53. As a tribute to the band’s legacy, CBC will re-air the unforgettable last concert this Saturday, marking its 10th anniversary and honoring Downie’s enduring impact on fans.
Reflecting on the event, guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the continued support and reverence shown by fans towards the band and their music. For Langlois, the solemnity of the occasion weighed heavily on him before the performance, only to be lifted by Downie’s infectious optimism and reassurance that the show would be memorable and enjoyable.
The band members initially harbored concerns about Downie’s health affecting his stage presence, but were pleasantly surprised by his physical resilience throughout the tour. Looking back, Langlois admitted that the band had underestimated the profound impact of their final show, only realizing its magnitude in the aftermath as they witnessed the outpouring of tributes from fans across the country.
While both Baker and Langlois affirm that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, the band recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016”, featuring live recordings from their farewell tour. Baker highlighted the band’s forward-thinking approach and the healing power of music, recounting a poignant moment with Downie that underscored the emotional catharsis music can provide in times of grief and reflection.
