The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback during the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada had to be canceled on Friday due to incomplete track construction, leading to a delay in the final safety check by officials. Organizers mentioned their plans to accommodate the missed track sessions from the first day into the schedule for Saturday.
Markham hosted the event for the first time this year after its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its establishment in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, the president of IndyCar, expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing the significant support provided by their team on-site. He acknowledged the enthusiastic crowd turnout in Ontario and apologized for the logistical challenges faced.
Local attendees like Mark Coburn from Kitchener and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, who have been regular spectators for two decades, shared mixed feelings about the delayed sessions. They understood the importance of ensuring track safety but expressed disappointment over the lack of on-track action, which attracts both existing and potential fans.
The move of the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was jointly announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September. The new temporary circuit, set up for the first time recently, spans between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Incomplete features, such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments for marshals, contributed to the delays.
Government investments of $5 million and additional funding from the federal and municipal levels highlighted the significant financial backing for the event. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed substantial capital spending exceeding $12 million for race-related infrastructure upgrades in the city.
Despite the challenges, Friday’s free-entry policy for the IndyCar race attracted a large crowd to Markham, with pleasant weather conditions. Attendees noted the lack of shade and seating options compared to the previous venue at Exhibition Place. Off-track activities, including driver autograph sessions, proceeded as planned.
Saturday’s schedule is expected to be busier, with IndyCar hosting practice sessions and a qualifying round during the day. The qualifying format will follow the traditional road course knockout pattern due to time constraints. Event organizers expressed optimism about the track’s potential and extended gratitude to the city of Markham for its support in creating a fast and technically challenging circuit.
In addition to IndyCar, other racing series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will feature races on the road course over the weekend. Attendees like Stobo hinted at potential future visits but indicated satisfaction with their current experience at the event.
