Russian counter-intelligence chief Alexander Bortnikov has expressed concerns about the presence of alleged British-backed espionage and sabotage activities against Russia. During a meeting in Uzbekistan, he highlighted the perceived influence of the UK on various security threats faced by Russia.
Bortnikov raised suspicions of British involvement in orchestrating acts of terrorism and sabotage within Russia, reportedly supported by British special services. He pointed to alleged plans of incursions by Ukrainian groups into Russian border regions and attacks on critical infrastructure, with British intelligence purportedly overseeing these operations.
Additionally, Bortnikov accused Britain of contributing to a lack of peace in Ukraine and blamed British provocations for hindering settlement efforts. He claimed that British agencies were behind propaganda efforts surrounding incidents like the Ukrainian Spiderweb operation, which saw drone strikes targeting Russian strategic bomber aircraft.
In emphasizing a siege mentality within Moscow, Bortnikov suggested that NATO countries’ intelligence services played a significant role in creating instability across different regions. He also criticized Britain for fueling fears of an Eastern threat and highlighted his view of British involvement in shaping global instability.
Bortnikov, a long-serving intelligence officer and Putin loyalist, has led the FSB since 2008. He accused Britain of playing a pivotal role in shaping negative perceptions of Russia and fostering international tensions.
