Passenger Challenges EasyJet Over Bag Fee Dispute

An easyJet passenger shared her experience of challenging the airline after being fined for carrying a bag deemed oversized. Louise Machin was surprised when she was charged €58 (£51) upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete. Despite checking the bag’s dimensions beforehand, easyJet staff claimed it was too large.

Upon contacting the bag manufacturer to prove compliance, easyJet refunded the fee. However, Machin’s case is not unique, as Which? reports instances of passengers unfairly penalized due to issues with airport bag sizers.

Travelers are advised to double-check baggage dimensions due to inconsistencies in sizer accuracy at various airports. Machin, a film and TV sales director from Crystal Palace, faced the fine on her return journey despite previous successful travels with the same bag.

Despite her bag meeting the requirements, ground staff at Chania Airport insisted on payment, creating a confrontational situation. After verifying compliance with the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max, Machin received a refund from easyJet.

Which? highlights similar incidents across airlines, suggesting that minor protrusions like handles can lead to penalties. The organization recommends appealing fines if passengers believe their bags are within acceptable limits.

EasyJet acknowledged Machin’s case and refunded the fee, maintaining that their bag sizers adhere to standard dimensions. The airline apologizes for any inconvenience caused and commits to addressing customer feedback on a case-by-case basis.
