The prospect of ending new HIV transmissions within the next five years is now a realistic goal, marking a remarkable milestone in our journey.
While progress has been made, stigma surrounding HIV still persists, hindering testing and open conversations. This lingering stigma results in delayed diagnoses, preventing timely treatment that could safeguard health and prevent transmission. The introduction of a new HIV action plan is crucial not only for achieving the ambitious target of eliminating new transmissions by 2030 but also for combatting the stigma that impedes many from seeking assistance.
The comprehensive £170 million plan includes initiatives to improve access to care and treatment for individuals in England living with HIV, particularly those facing challenges in receiving support. Additionally, routine HIV testing in healthcare settings like A&E will be enhanced, alongside screening for Hepatitis B and C, ensuring early detection and intervention.
