A specialist from British Gas shared guidance on how to address cold areas in your radiator, with a tool costing just 97p that can assist in the process.
If you notice cold spots on your radiator, particularly at the top, or hear gurgling sounds and experience slow heating, it is likely time to bleed your radiator. This task is relatively simple but requires the appropriate equipment.
Acquiring a radiator key, available for as low as 97p at Screwfix, is essential for bleeding your radiator, which essentially involves releasing trapped air.
Before beginning the bleeding process, British Gas’s technical repair engineer Peter Knowles advises turning off the heating system.
Ensure the radiator has completely cooled down before commencing to avoid potential burns from hot water.
Prepare an old towel and a container to collect the water that will be released. Once ready, locate the small valve on the radiator and use the key to turn it anti-clockwise.

Peter recommended, “Open the valve slightly until you hear a hissing sound – this indicates trapped air escaping. Once water starts to emerge after the hissing stops, collect it in your container. Then, tighten the valve and repeat the process on the next radiator.”
