NATO fighter jets were deployed to intercept a Russian surveillance aircraft as tensions rise over recent airspace violations and drone activities across European airports, indicating a potential hybrid warfare strategy by Russia. The IL-20 COOT-A, an electronic reconnaissance plane, was spotted in international airspace near Finnmark, Norway, prompting the scramble of two F35 stealth fighter jets from NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert.
In response to similar incidents, NATO established air defense operations in Eastern Europe, including the Eastern Sentry operation aimed at countering Russian drone threats. Lt Gen Alex Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, praised the coordinated response but emphasized the need for unified rules of engagement and equipment flexibility to enhance airspace defense.
The escalation of airspace incidents began with Russian drones breaching Polish airspace on September 10, leading to NATO intercept missions and subsequent encounters with Russian warplanes in Estonia. European defense ministers are now planning to establish a “drone wall” along borders to boost drone detection and interception capabilities, amid ongoing denials by Russia regarding its involvement in the incidents.
