Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is likely to face charges of ‘reckless driving’ following a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close associates. According to reports from The Daily Mail, a 47-year-old man who is an integral part of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team is set to be formally charged within the next 48 hours.
The driver was discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve and subsequently transported to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the tragic accident occurred earlier this week. After hours of questioning, he provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the crash, which resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s dear friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.
Joshua, who was also released from the hospital, accompanied his mother in paying respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK. A police source mentioned that the driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken for questioning at the state police headquarters. The source indicated that a decision on charges for reckless driving is expected within 48 hours.
The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a parked truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the authorities. Initial investigations suggest overspeeding on the part of the SUV Joshua was in, leading to a burst tire and loss of control before the collision with the stationary truck.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, paid tribute to the deceased friends, expressing his sorrow on Instagram. Additionally, Sky has announced a reduction in the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the upcoming season, offering an increased number of live matches across various leagues.
