The Australian forensic pathologist known as ‘Doctor Death’ has shared disturbing insights into various fatal incidents after years of delving into the macabre and grim aspects of death.
Roger Byard, a renowned forensic pathologist holding the George Richard Marks Chair of Pathology at the University of Adelaide, has delved into numerous death cases, including those involving victims of serial killers and fatal encounters with various animals like dogs, snakes, sharks, roosters, and mackerel.
In a recent episode of the I Catch Killers podcast hosted by former detective chief inspector Gary Jubelin, Roger disclosed, “I’ve collected data on animal-related deaths.” He recounted a tragic incident in Australia’s Northern Territory where a fisherman met his demise when a 25-kilogram mackerel unexpectedly leaped from the water and fatally struck him in Darwin Harbour, attributing it to being in the “wrong place at the wrong time.”
Moreover, Byard shared details of one of his early cases, the notorious ‘bodies in barrels’ murders, which shook Australia in the 90s. This series of gruesome killings, orchestrated by ringleader John Justin Bunting, along with accomplices Robert Joe Wagner and James Spyridon Vlassakis in Snowtown, South Australia, involved torturing and murdering individuals suspected of being pedophiles, as well as targeting LGBTQ community members and victims based on their weight.
Recounting the harrowing experience, Roger described his initial encounter with the ‘bodies in barrels’ case, where he and his team had to examine eight partially dismembered bodies found in barrels, a chilling discovery made when a colleague noticed feet protruding from one of the containers.
Additionally, Doctor Death shared a bizarre incident involving an elderly woman who tragically succumbed to injuries inflicted by her own aggressive roosters. Describing the incident where the rooster attacked the lady causing her death due to varicose veins, Roger emphasized the potential risks associated with such medical conditions.
Despite the occasional lighter moments in his narrative, Roger highlighted the emotional toll faced by forensic pathologists, addressing the challenges of dealing with traumatic cases and the responsibility of communicating difficult findings to grieving families.
