A man who kidnapped, raped, and killed a six-year-old girl has been executed on death row. Bryan Frederick Jennings was found guilty over 45 years ago for the murder, kidnapping, burglary, and sexual assault of Rebecca Kunash. He took the girl to a canal, where he raped her and then violently threw her to the ground, resulting in a fatal skull fracture. Her body was later discovered in the canal.
Jennings, who was 20 at the time, was put to death at the prison near Starke, Florida. He received a lethal injection, marking the 16th execution in Florida this year. Despite being a former US Marine, Jennings opted not to make a final statement before his execution.
Following the girl’s assault, Jennings was apprehended on an unrelated traffic charge. Evidence linked him to the crime scene, including matching shoeprints, fingerprints on the girl’s windowsill, and wet clothing and hair. He was convicted twice and sentenced to death, with the final conviction occurring in 1986, along with life sentences for other charges.
Governor Ron DeSantis, who authorized Jennings’ execution, has overseen more executions in a year than any other Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Two additional executions are scheduled for later this year, bringing the total to 18 for 2021.
DeSantis explained that the increased executions aim to provide closure and justice to victims’ families, emphasizing the importance of delivering timely justice. He stated that if he believed someone to be innocent, he would not proceed with the executions.
