A supporter of the Labour Party has taken action ahead of potential government restrictions on children’s social media usage. Dale Vince, known for his outspoken views, criticized tech moguls Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he sees as their unchecked influence on young people.
Responding to parents’ concerns, the founder of Ecotricity, a company focused on green energy, has introduced a mobile plan that permits children unlimited calls and texts but excludes internet access. Vince, a millionaire businessman, argued that this “old school” approach was necessary due to the harmful content prevalent on the internet and called for government intervention.
This move comes at a time when there is mounting pressure on the government to prevent individuals under 16 from using social media platforms. Recently, over 60 Labour MPs urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead in implementing such a ban, with other nations also contemplating similar measures. Starmer has not dismissed the possibility of enforcing a ban, stating that all options are being considered.
Among Vince’s ventures is Ecotalk, a service utilizing EE’s mobile network to support land restoration projects. The company has launched a new SIM-only plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting at £4 per month, with no internet access provided.
Vince emphasized the importance of offering a communication tool that keeps children connected without exposing them to online risks posed by tech giants like Musk and Zuckerberg. He highlighted the need to address the negative impact of irresponsible online platforms on young individuals and stressed the proactive stance taken by Ecotalk with the introduction of the kids SIM plan.
Established in 2018 by Vince, Ecotalk collaborates with ecologist and Springwatch presenter Chris Packham to promote environmental initiatives in Sussex and Devon.
