The aftermath of a deadly tornado in Paris reveals the devastation caused by the twister that ripped through the outskirts of the French capital last night.
The tornado struck an area just ten miles north of Paris on Monday evening, resulting in one fatality and nine individuals sustaining serious injuries. The Val d’Oise region bore the brunt of the weather event, triggering a significant emergency response that saw residents evacuated from their homes and seeking refuge in a gym.
Dramatic footage captured the moment three cranes collapsed, one after another, as the tornado wreaked havoc in the area. Approximately 80 firefighters, 50 police officers, and 20 ambulance service personnel were mobilized, with four individuals in critical condition.
Among the casualties was a 23-year-old construction worker who tragically lost his life on a building site. The powerful winds tore off roofs of buildings in the area, as authorities described the tornado as “sudden” and “unusually intense.” The process of cleaning up the aftermath has commenced as locals grapple with the extent of the destruction.
According to the Keraunos observatory, a French weather monitoring organization, the sudden gusts appeared to originate from a storm known as a “supercell,” characterized by a rotating updraft of air that can sustain severe weather conditions for hours, including large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), expressed condolences and support for the affected individuals, emergency services, and local officials in response to the tornado episode in Vald’Oise.
The freak weather event on Monday resulted in homes being destroyed, with three cranes collapsing in the high winds, roofs ripped off buildings, and dozens seeking shelter in a local gym. Over 80 firefighters were deployed to assist terrified residents, while Philippe Court, the Prefect of Val-d’Oise, addressed the nation regarding the situation. Video footage captured the swirling winds and the harrowing moment when the cranes toppled, leaving residents in shock.
