Anthony Joshua has returned to England following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two individuals. The British heavyweight boxer arrived at London Stansted Airport on Friday night and was then transported to his residence for ongoing recovery, as per reports from The Sun.
The funeral arrangements for Joshua’s friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, are scheduled to take place at a mosque in London the following day. Close relatives and friends have been invited to participate in a ‘janaza prayer service’ in honor of the departed companions.
There is uncertainty surrounding Joshua’s attendance at the funeral, with concerns raised about the potential media attention it may attract.
Reports indicate that Joshua narrowly escaped the fatal crash by switching seats just before the journey commenced, leading to the tragic demise of two of his friends. While the boxer sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, his friends lost their lives in the accident.
The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. His legal representative stated that the incident was accidental, attributing it to brake failure. There was a last-minute seat switch between Joshua and the driver prior to the journey, with further seat changes among the passengers.
Kayode, aged 46, was behind the wheel of a black Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua and his friends when the collision occurred with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Following treatment at a Lagos hospital, he was discharged and subsequently taken to Abeokuta for further proceedings.
After being released from the hospital, Joshua paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before they were repatriated to the United Kingdom for their final rites.
The case against Kayode has been adjourned for trial on January 20, while Joshua continues his recovery process at his Nigerian residence after the tragic incident.
