“Prince Harry Raises Alarm on Social Media’s Mental Health Impact”

Prince Harry delivered a powerful speech in New York on World Mental Health Day, highlighting the impact of social media on young people. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the Big Apple for two days, receiving recognition for their humanitarian work and participating in the Project Healthy Minds World Mental Health Day Festival.

During the event, Harry emphasized how the digital world has transformed our perception of reality over the past five years, particularly during the pandemic. He mentioned the rise in anxiety, depression, and disconnection globally, citing conflicts in various regions like Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and the DRC as contributors to trauma among individuals and families.

Harry emphasized the interconnected nature of mental health issues, pointing out that they are intertwined with public health, foreign policy, climate policy, corporate practices, and economic decisions. He also highlighted the negative impact of social media on young people, exposing them to constant comparison, harassment, misinformation, and a culture that prioritizes screen time over genuine human interaction.

Meanwhile, Meghan discussed the work of their charity, the Archewell Foundation, in supporting families affected by the harmful effects of social media. She shared stories of families devastated by social media-related suicides and stressed the importance of communal support in healing such grief.

The couple’s remarks came shortly after Princess Diana expressed concerns about the growing “epidemic of disconnection” caused by excessive smartphone and device usage. Kate also addressed the challenges posed by modern technology on family life in collaboration with Professor Robert Waldinger in an essay for the Harvard Study of Adult Development.
