In the Davis Cup final, the second singles match was interrupted when a spectator fell ill in the stands. Flavio Cobolli of Italy was on the verge of breaking Jaume Munar’s serve when he noticed the situation with the fan.
Munar had taken the lead by winning the first set 6-1 and was ahead in the second set when Cobolli had a chance to break back. The match was paused as medical assistance was called to attend to the spectator, causing both players to retreat to their benches.
Commentator Arvind Parmar commended Cobolli for his prompt response, noting the quick reaction of the crowd in raising awareness. During the break, umpire Marijana Veljovic had discussions with the players, and Italian captain Filippo Volandri offered advice to Cobolli.
As the fan was being escorted from the stands, Parmar speculated on the potential delay in play if further assistance was required for the individual. The delay lasted approximately ten minutes before Cobolli managed to break Munar’s serve and even the score in the second set.
Italy held a 1-0 lead going into the second singles match, following Matteo Berrettini’s victory over Pablo Carreno Busta. A win for Cobolli could secure Italy’s third consecutive title win, a feat not achieved since the USA’s dominance in 1972. However, a win for Munar would set the stage for a crucial doubles round.
Both teams were missing key players, as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had withdrawn from the final before the weekend.
