“Florida Executes Man 27 Years After Neighbor’s Murder”

An individual who consistently denied the accusations of raping and killing his neighbor 27 years ago faced execution on death row today. Norman Mearle Grim Jr, aged 65, had been convicted of the sexual assault and first-degree murder of Cynthia Campbell, despite maintaining his innocence during court proceedings. He received a lethal three-drug injection in Florida, marking the state’s 15th execution of the year.

When asked if he wanted to make a final statement, Grim replied, “No sir.” Following the administration of the injection, he exhibited heavy breathing and slight twitching before being pronounced dead, almost three decades after Campbell’s tragic demise. Campbell was reported missing in 1998, and her lifeless body was discovered by a fisherman in waters near the Pensacola Bay Bridge in Florida.

Prosecutors revealed that Campbell sustained severe blunt-force injuries to her face and head, consistent with hammer blows, along with 11 stab wounds to her chest, seven of which pierced her heart. Grim’s connection to the crime was established through DNA evidence. Despite his persistent denial, Grim was found guilty in 2000 and sentenced to death, a sentence that was carried out 27 years later.

Since the reinstatement of the death penalty by the US Supreme Court in 1976, Florida witnessed its highest annual execution count this year, surpassing previous records. Florida leads in executions this year, followed by Texas and Alabama. Inmates can appeal to the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court before their execution date, but Grim did not receive any visitors or spiritual guidance on his final day.

Forty individuals have been executed by court order in the US this year, with at least 18 more scheduled for execution in 2025 and beyond. Florida ranks first in executions this year, with two more executions planned next month. Bryan Fredrick Jennings, 66, is set for execution on November 13 for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in 1979.
