U.S. President Donald Trump has once more issued a warning to Oman while Iran confirms collaboration with the Gulf Arab nation on a strategy to oversee shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz. The complete reopening of the strait remains a significant request from the U.S.
Simultaneously, the 60-day negotiation period to reach a peace agreement between the United States and Iran has lapsed, with no mention of an extension and both sides seemingly maintaining their initial stances.
Iran has reported progress in finalizing a deal with Oman concerning the transit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, situated between the two countries. They are currently working on formalizing the details for a joint statement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei disclosed in Tehran that there is an agreement regarding the transit route map.
The agreement is anticipated to allow ships to pass through the strait without fees or tolls during an interim phase, with ships entering near Iran and exiting near Oman. The U.S. has been pursuing a satisfactory agreement on the strait’s reopening before lifting its blockade on Iranian ports.
The strait was effectively closed by Iran following attacks by Israel and the U.S. on February 28, disrupting the passage of approximately one-fifth of the world’s traded oil supplies.
President Trump previously made a threatening statement towards Oman during an interview with Fox News reporter Trey Yingst, emphasizing that the U.S. would take military action against Oman if it obstructs their plans. This is not the first instance of Trump making such remarks about Oman. He insisted that Oman comply or face consequences during a prior cabinet meeting.
António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has urged Iran and the U.S. to resume peace talks, emphasizing that a military resolution is not viable and calling for a reduction in inflammatory rhetoric.
In a separate development, Yemen’s Houthi rebels asserted responsibility for attacking a ship and four military vessels in the Red Sea near Mokha, Yemen. They allegedly launched ballistic missiles at the vessels, causing damage and the burning of the boats. The rebels claimed the vessels belonged to Saudi Arabia.
Additionally, drone attacks targeted officials in northern Iraq, with the regional counterterrorism service attributing the attacks to the border with Iran. The attacks targeted the office of Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of Iraq’s northern Kurdish region, and the residence of a top regional intelligence official. There were no casualties reported, and no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.
