Counter Terrorism Policing North West revealed that Jihad Al-Shamie, the Manchester synagogue attacker, phoned emergency services to declare his allegiance to the Islamic State group during the tragic incident. Al-Shamie, aged 35, took responsibility for the assault at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, where he was later fatally shot by police after a violent rampage involving a car ramming, knife attacks, and an attempted entry into the building.
Authorities suspect that Al-Shamie was motivated by extremist Islamist beliefs, categorizing the assault as a terrorist act. The attack claimed the lives of congregation members Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Police reported that Daulby was mistakenly shot by an armed officer during efforts to prevent Al-Shamie from breaching the synagogue, resulting in injuries to three other men.
In response to the incident, law enforcement detained four suspects, comprising two men aged 30 and 32, and two women aged 46 and 61, for further questioning. Two individuals, an 18-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man, were released without charges. The identities of those arrested and their connections to Al-Shamie have not been disclosed by the police.
Moreover, revelations from a woman who had an Islamic marriage with Al-Shamie surfaced, detailing his abusive and controlling behavior towards her. She described enduring mental and sexual abuse while being deceived about his existing marital status, as Al-Shamie admitted to having a wife and child in Manchester after their marriage. Faraj Al-Shamie, the attacker’s father, expressed deep sorrow and disassociation from the violent act, extending condolences to the victims and their families.
