Several prominent snooker players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their thoughts on a rule they believe should be changed in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, these top players were asked about a potential alteration to snooker rules, and one particular regulation was consistently highlighted.
Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, alongside other players, has proposed a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a source of frustration for top players. Currently, if a player fails to make contact with the designated ball during a shot and the attempt is considered inadequate, the referee can call a foul and a miss.
A ‘miss’ is usually called when the referee perceives that a player opted for a more difficult shot instead of choosing an easier escape from a snooker. It can also be invoked if a player underplays a shot, indicating a lack of effort.
When a ‘foul and a miss’ is declared, the opponent of the offending player can choose to reset the balls for a retake or leave them as they are on the table. Continuous calling of ‘foul and a miss’ may lead to the player repeatedly attempting the same shot while their opponent accumulates points without having to play.
Conversely, the ‘three-miss rule’ dictates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball three times consecutively automatically forfeits the frame to their opponent. This rule has sparked debates within the sport, with critics pointing out its potential for inconsistent enforcement, game slowdowns, and confusion for casual viewers.
When asked about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan and Wilson both emphasized their desire to address the miss rule, with Wilson suggesting a limit of no more than three misses. Selby also weighed in, proposing a restriction where a player can only miss three times before the frame is conceded, expressing concerns about undeserved wins due to repeated misses.
Former world champion Murphy took a different stance, criticizing how the miss rule can be exploited for deliberate fouls. He advocated for revising the foul and a miss rule to prevent players from strategically using it to their advantage.
Additionally, current world number three Neil Robertson recommended a reform where failure to make contact with a directly visible red ball results in a free ball for the opponent, aiming to expedite gameplay.
Apart from addressing the miss rule, snooker’s top players also raised concerns about the sport’s traditional dress code, which mandates long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear. Many players in the sport believe these requirements should be relaxed to adapt to modern times.
In response to the same query, Mark Allen highlighted the need to relax the dress code, while Luca Brecel emphasized the importance of updating rules related to the dress code, shot clock, and always hitting a cushion for a more dynamic gameplay experience.
