A mother facing charges of both torture and murder involving her 8-year-old son shielded her face in court following the distressing discovery of the child inside a cooler filled with ice.
The boy, identified as Isaiah H, was found in the cooler at a residential complex on October 28, triggering charges of murder and torture against his parents and grandmother. The startling revelation occurred after a neighbor raised concerns prompting a welfare check.
During the initial court appearance, Destiny Luckie Harrison, 25, the mother of Isaiah, obscured her face while the child’s father, Daniel Alberto Monzon, 25, and grandmother, Ana Carcamo Zarceno, 45, did not attend the court session.
In addition to the murder and torture charges, the trio also faces accusations of being accessories after the fact, as stated in a news release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney. District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman expressed dismay, highlighting the severe abuse suffered by Isaiah allegedly at the hands of his own family.
The arrests and charges were made on October 31, coinciding with the scheduled arraignment in Compton, southern Los Angeles. Monzon opted not to appear in court, while Zarceno claimed illness as the reason for her absence.
Despite appearing in court, Harrison’s defense attorney used file folders to shield her face from view, even during her entrance to the courtroom. Authorities struggled to confirm Isaiah’s age but revealed that he is believed to be eight years old.
Following the discovery of the boy’s body, three other children aged 16, 14, and 9 were found at the same residence. One of the children reportedly witnessed the alleged abuse. Bail for the parents and grandmother has been set at $2 million.
If convicted, the defendants could face a sentence ranging from 32 years to life in a California state prison, according to the district attorney’s office.
