Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious in the recent New York City Mayoral election by securing over a million votes. At 34 years old, Mamdani becomes the city’s youngest mayor and the first Muslim of South Asian descent to hold the position.
Scheduled to assume office in January, Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, an accomplished illustrator, is poised to become the city’s inaugural Gen Z First Lady at just 28 years old. Born in Houston and raised in Dubai with Syrian-American roots, Rama joined her husband on stage at Brooklyn’s Paramount Theatre following his election victory, exuding elegance in a black lace dress, drawing comparisons to the iconic Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn in her hairstyle.
The couple’s love story began on the online dating platform Hinge in 2021, culminating in their engagement in October 2024 and a Nikkah ceremony in Dubai in December 2024, followed by a civil ceremony at Lower Manhattan’s City Hall the following February.
Mamdani, the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani, hails from a distinguished background. His wife, Duwaji, spent her formative years in Dubai before relocating to New York in 2021. A graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, Duwaji’s Instagram showcases her Arab heritage and monochromatic illustrations.
The couple is anticipated to move into Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence dating back to 1799, as Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, pledges policies such as free public transportation, rent freezes, reduced police presence, and increased taxes for the affluent and large corporations. In a bold declaration to his supporters in Brooklyn, Mamdani asserted his identity proudly, stating, “I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.”
Addressing President Trump directly, Mamdani’s message was clear, urging him to pay attention, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up! If any city can show a nation how to stop Donald Trump, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
Mamdani’s impassioned speech resonated with the crowd, eliciting thunderous cheers as they commemorated his historic triumph.
