Keir Starmer has revealed a new funding initiative aimed at enhancing security at mosques following a recent suspected arson attack on one such facility.
The government has announced a £10 million allocation to support mosques and Muslim faith centers in safeguarding themselves against hate crimes and assaults. This funding injection will assist in implementing security measures like CCTV installation, alarm systems, secure fencing, and security personnel.
Mr. Starmer expressed his sense of humility during his visit to the Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, which suffered damage to its front entrance and a vehicle in the fire incident on October 4. Sussex Police reported the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in relation to the fire.
Stating on Thursday, Mr. Starmer emphasized the inclusive nature of Britain, denouncing attacks on any community as attacks on the nation’s core values. He highlighted the significance of the funding in providing Muslim communities with the necessary protection to live peacefully and securely.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also condemned the attack on the Peacehaven Mosque, emphasizing the importance of defending the right to practice one’s chosen faith without fear or hatred. She called for unity against acts of violence and intimidation directed at any community.
Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, welcomed the funding, underscoring the fundamental role of religious freedom in British society. She stressed the importance of ensuring that all individuals can lead peaceful lives without fear or intimidation based on their identity.
