Liam Payne Case: One Year On, Trial Delays Linger

One year has passed since the untimely death of Liam Payne, with authorities still reviewing 800 hours of CCTV footage related to the One Direction star’s demise. Payne, a renowned singer-songwriter who gained fame as part of the boy band One Direction, tragically passed away on October 16, 2024, after a fatal fall from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room.

Born in Wolverhampton, Liam was only 31 when he met his demise in Buenos Aires, Argentina, far from his family, including his son Bear, whom he co-parented with popstar Cheryl. The news of his death prompted an outpouring of grief globally, with fans coming together for vigils in various cities worldwide.

A private funeral was held for Liam the following month at Saint Mary’s Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, where a poignant ‘Daddy’ tribute made of white roses symbolized the personal loss felt by those closest to him away from the public eye.

In January 2025, a UK inquest determined that Liam’s death was due to polytrauma, a condition involving multiple bodily injuries. A toxicology report also revealed the presence of cocaine, alcohol, and prescription antidepressants in his system.

As attention once again focuses on Liam and his bereaved family, unanswered questions linger, with law enforcement officers still sifting through extensive CCTV footage. Two individuals have been accused of supplying drugs to Liam – Braian Paiz, 25, and Ezequl David Pereya, 22 – both denying the allegations and awaiting trial.

Paiz, currently detained alongside other inmates, has expressed concerns for his safety while incarcerated, claiming innocence in an interview earlier in the year. Once a restaurant worker serving clientele like Liam, Paiz now awaits trial in a maximum-security Argentine prison.

Despite the prolonged investigation, Argentinian law enforcement has yet to set a trial date, a delay frustrating both authorities and Liam’s loved ones. The slow progress has led to criticism of the investigation’s pace, with concerns over the thoroughness of evidence examination.

Under Argentinian legal procedures, evidence is collected by the prosecutor’s office for presentation to a judge to determine trial proceedings. Liam’s family remains optimistic about a trial eventually taking place and stays informed about ongoing developments.
