Tragic Death Linked to Meth-Laced Beer

After a tiring day at his job, Aiden Sagala opted to unwind with a cold beer, not realizing the grave consequences that awaited him. Unbeknownst to the 21-year-old, the can he chose was filled with liquid methamphetamine, leading to his tragic demise with just a single sip.

The unfortunate incident occurred on March 2, 2023, as Aiden selected a can from a batch of beer given to him by his employer, which he brought home. At the time, he shared a residence with his sister Angela and her husband Billy in Auckland, New Zealand. Reports from Cp24 indicate that Aiden and Billy, along with a friend, decided to indulge in ‘Honey Bear Beer’ tall cans imported from Canada.

Upon tasting the beer, Aiden found it oddly salty and sought Billy’s opinion. Despite Billy assuring him that the beer was fine, Aiden offered him a sip to validate his experience. Billy’s immediate reaction was to spit out the drink due to its unpleasant taste resembling a mix of sea salt and chemicals.

Subsequently, Aiden contacted his mother, prompting a series of alarming events. Minutes later, he emerged from his room expressing a sense of impending doom to his brother-in-law. Aiden’s behavior escalated as he became agitated and vocally distressed, repeatedly yearning for his mother while she helplessly listened over the phone.

In a state of panic, Billy reached out to Angela, who hurried home to assist her brother. Witnessing Aiden’s deteriorating condition, Angela promptly called for an ambulance. Despite her medical background, Aiden slipped into a coma and tragically passed away five days later due to multiple organ failure caused by a fatal methamphetamine dose.

The aftermath of Aiden’s untimely death unveiled a significant drug smuggling ring spanning across India, the United States, and Canada. Following investigations into Aiden’s case, New Zealand authorities traced their leads to a storage unit in Auckland, where a seizure of approximately 700 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine was executed, marking the largest seizure of its kind in the nation.

Police investigations implicated Baltej Singh, a local supermarket owner, as the mastermind behind the smuggling operation. Singh had imported substantial quantities of methamphetamine disguised as various beverages into New Zealand, including shipments of kombucha from the US, coconut water from India, and nearly 29,000 cans of the Honey Bear beer from Toronto.

Furthermore, Aiden’s boss, known as Himatjit ‘Jimmy’ Kahlon, was caught on surveillance cameras removing beer cases from the storage unit. He faced allegations of aiding in the conversion of liquid methamphetamine into crystal meth, inadvertently leaving some cans filled with methamphetamine in the beer cases, leading to Aiden’s tragic consumption and subsequent demise.

Kahlon was subsequently charged with manslaughter in connection to Aiden’s death, while Singh, a reputable businessman in Auckland with a prominent family background in India, faced charges related to orchestrating the import operation.
