A person has tragically passed away amidst the impact of Storm Amy in the UK and Ireland.
Reportedly in his forties, the individual lost his life in a weather-related incident in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, as confirmed by Gardai. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene around 4:15 pm.
The deceased was transported to the morgue at Letterkenny University Hospital for a post mortem examination which will guide further investigations. Gardai are actively pursuing inquiries, and the outcomes of the post mortem examination will dictate the subsequent actions, leading to the preparation of a file for the coroner.
Storm Amy has brought forth strong winds and rainfall across the British Isles as it approached the UK and Ireland today. The storm has left approximately 50,000 properties without power in Northern Ireland due to the severe conditions.
NIE Networks has reported significant damage to the electricity infrastructure in the region. Alex Houston, the operations manager at NIE Networks, stated that response efforts have been escalated, with additional resources deployed to address customer queries regarding the restoration process.
In the Republic of Ireland, about 184,000 homes, farms, and businesses were left without power by 5:15 pm during the storm. The affected areas mainly include counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan, and Donegal.
