Shocking bodycam footage captured the aftermath of a terrifying incident where a teacher was shot by her young student. Abby Zwerner was severely injured after being shot in the hand, chest, and lung by her six-year-old pupil. Despite her injuries, Zwerner managed to lead her other students to safety before collapsing. The distressing footage was presented in court as part of Zwerner’s legal action against the former assistant principal of the school in Virginia.
Zwerner filed a lawsuit alleging that the assistant principal, Ebony Parker, ignored warnings from staff about the possibility of the young boy being armed on that fateful day. The shooting took place at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, in January 2023. Zwerner underwent multiple surgeries and a lengthy hospitalization to survive the ordeal, but a bullet remains lodged in her chest, and she has suffered physical and mental trauma, including the loss of the use of her left hand.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for the lasting effects of the incident. Attorney Diane Toscano argued in court that Parker failed to take appropriate action despite having the authority to intervene. The defense attorney for Parker claimed that the incident was unforeseeable and highlighted the challenges of judging decisions made in hindsight. The court dismissed claims against the school’s principal and district superintendent in relation to the incident.
The mother of the boy responsible for the shooting, Deja Taylor, received a nearly four-year prison sentence for child neglect and weapons charges. The child was moved to a different school under the care of his great-grandfather. Taylor’s son confessed to authorities that he accessed his mother’s handgun from her purse by climbing onto furniture. Despite Taylor’s initial claim of securing the gun with a trigger lock, investigators found no evidence of one.
