“Stepmother Sentenced to 23 Years for Poisoning Stepdaughter”

A 37-year-old woman, Clara Masinga, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for poisoning her 11-year-old stepdaughter with rat poison in a malicious act against the girl’s mother. Masinga pleaded guilty to premeditated murder under a plea and sentence agreement with the State, resulting in her sentencing on Wednesday, October 15, at the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Mbombela, South Africa.

The incident occurred on March 21, 2015, when Masinga orchestrated the poisoning by sending the victim’s friend to bring her to a location where she was waiting. Subsequently, Masinga obtained rat poison and ice cream, which she mixed together and gave to the victim, Jennifer Gumbi, causing her to fall ill. Jennifer was later discovered near the Mlumati River after ingesting the poison.

To cover up her crime, Masinga poured boiling water on Jennifer’s body before being arrested by the police. She confessed in court that her motive for the murder was to spite the victim’s biological mother. Despite pleading guilty, the court decided to impose a 23-year direct imprisonment sentence, deviating from the minimum prescribed sentence.

The presiding Judge Vukeya condemned the prevalent cases of domestic violence and the ongoing violence against women and children in South Africa. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) expressed satisfaction with the sentence, emphasizing their commitment to vigorously prosecuting cases of domestic and gender-based violence to deter potential offenders.
