A woman working at a daycare has been taken into custody and accused of causing a three-month-old baby to suffer a broken arm, as per authorities. Allegedly, Ashley Karschnick, 32, became agitated when the infant cried each time she touched her, and allegedly resorted to forcefully hitting the baby against a crib, resulting in the arm fracture.
Karschnick is facing a felony charge of child abuse for recklessly causing harm following the incident at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac. Law enforcement responded to a children’s hospital after the baby girl was admitted with a fractured arm. Medical records indicate the baby sustained a specific type of fracture consistent with physical abuse.
After an investigation that included interviews and surveillance footage review, authorities found that Karschnick, who was working in the baby room that day, displayed increasing frustration. The incident where the baby’s arm was broken reportedly occurred around 12:30 p.m. The surveillance footage allegedly shows Karschnick forcefully handling the baby, causing the crib to shake visibly.
Subsequent footage allegedly shows Karschnick attempting to soothe the crying baby to no avail. Despite the visible distress of the infant, Karschnick denied any wrongdoing besides accidentally bumping into the crib.
Currently held in jail on a $2,500 bond, Karschnick requested permission during a court hearing to be around children in public places, but the judge upheld the existing bond conditions.
