The government of Nova Scotia has allocated $1.2 million to a laboratory at Acadia University for ongoing research into the prevention and management of tick-borne diseases. Nicoletta Faraone, who heads the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre, emphasized the significance of these funds in establishing and expanding the lab’s capabilities.
The funding will primarily support the lab’s surveillance program, which focuses on identifying the types of ticks present in the province, the pathogens they carry, and their responses to repellents or attractants. Tick bites can transmit various diseases, including Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, to humans.
With cutting-edge equipment at their disposal, the lab aims to streamline the pathogen-testing process. Faraone highlighted the broader objectives of the research, stating that it aims to enhance understanding of ticks and improve preparedness to minimize tick exposure.
Research Nova Scotia’s Focused Research Initiative, funded by the Department of Advanced Education, has provided the financial backing for this endeavor. Stefan Leslie, CEO of Research Nova Scotia, emphasized the importance of research that can translate into practical solutions for combating the increasing threat of tick-borne diseases to both humans and animals.
Recent data from the Public Health Agency of Canada revealed a surge in Lyme disease cases nationwide, with over 5,800 reported cases in 2024. Notably, Nova Scotia accounted for 40% of these cases. Additionally, other tick-borne illnesses like anaplasmosis are on the rise in the region.
In a bid to further support tick research, the federal government is contributing $455,000 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. This additional funding will enable the lab to continue its research efforts, including establishing a local tick-breeding program.
Previously, the Acadia lab had to procure ticks from a tick-breeding facility in Oklahoma State University, each costing $5. By breeding ticks locally, researchers can delve into the genetic characteristics of Canadian ticks and generate revenue by selling specimens to researchers nationally and internationally.
The lab’s tickery is now operational, with ticks collected throughout different seasons for breeding purposes. Faraone highlighted the importance of monitoring environmental conditions to facilitate the growth and multiplication of tick colonies.
