Incest perpetrator Josef Fritzl has been denied parole following his release from a psychiatric facility. Fritzl, who is serving a life sentence, sought to be moved to a care home due to a dementia diagnosis, but his parole request was turned down. The court in Graz, Austria, ruled that despite his age and health condition, Fritzl still poses a threat.
During the court hearing, Fritzl expressed remorse for his past offenses, which included imprisoning his daughter, Elisabeth, for 24 years. Despite his plea for release, the judges determined that he must remain in custody and continue therapy sessions at the Landesgericht District Court near Krems an der Donau.
Fritzl’s lawyer, Dr. Astrid Wagner, stated that the decision to deny parole was based on the assessment of his potential danger to society. She plans to appeal the ruling, believing that Fritzl could be released next year. Fritzl, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2009 for crimes like rape and false imprisonment, remains a polarizing figure, with his family members and victims opposing his bid for freedom.
Wagner revealed that Fritzl holds delusional beliefs about receiving a hero’s welcome upon release, a notion she dismissed as a fantasy. Despite his regrets and isolation from his family, Fritzl spends his days in confinement reading, watching TV, and interacting with young inmates. Wagner emphasized that he has no visitors apart from herself and often confuses reality with imagined events like news crews visiting him in his cell.
The case of Josef Fritzl, who infamously kept Elisabeth and her children captive in a hidden dungeon beneath his home in Amstetten, continues to evoke strong reactions from the public and legal authorities.
