Marie-Yasmine Alidou secured the decisive goal from a penalty kick in the 55th minute, leading the Montreal Roses to a 2-0 victory over AFC Toronto in Northern Super League play on Sunday. Elyse Bennett notched her ninth goal of the season to provide additional cushion for the second-ranked Roses (9-4-3), who competed in their inaugural match under interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel.
Despite Shelina Zadorsky seemingly equalizing for third-placed Toronto (7-5-4) in the 68th minute, her goal was nullified due to an offside infringement. Roses’ goalkeeper Anna Karpenko stood strong against 20 shots, with nine being on target, to secure a clean sheet.
In contrast, Toronto’s goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo faced seven shots, five of which were on target. The Roses took the field for the first time post the dismissal of head coach Robert Rositoiu, following a shocking 1-0 defeat to semi-professional team Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
