“Cristiano Ronaldo hints at retirement after this season”

Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the ongoing Saudi Pro League season may mark his final year in professional football. The 41-year-old football icon’s contract with Al-Nassr, which he inked in December 2022, is set to expire next June, and he shared with Vogue magazine that he is unlikely to pursue another contract.

“This is probably my last year in football, and I aim to create a remarkable legacy,” Ronaldo expressed. With a remarkable career that includes 976 goals, the Portugal striker recently married his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez.

“I have my future all planned out,” he stated. “I have numerous endeavors to keep me occupied, making it difficult to pinpoint just one. Since football’s departure could leave a significant void, I intend to engage in various activities to fill my time adequately.”

Furthermore, Ronaldo emphasized his desire to have more enjoyment, travel extensively, engage in padel – a sport he genuinely enjoys, and continue to relish the fruits of his labor. Reflecting on his 25-year journey filled with sacrifices, Ronaldo highlighted the need to explore diverse interests beyond football.

The ongoing SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional player, during which he has clinched five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles. His impressive 28 league goals in the previous season contributed to Al-Nassr’s triumph in Saudi Arabia, securing his first title since joining the club and the first league championship for Al-Nassr since 2019.

Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo was absent from Al-Nassr’s inaugural game in defense of their title, observing from the sidelines as the team commenced with a resounding 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s presence and influence within the team, emphasizing his pivotal role despite not playing the match.

Looking ahead, Ronaldo is anticipated to feature in the upcoming match against Al-Diriyah in the King’s Cup on Tuesday. Postecoglou, the former coach of Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, stressed the significance of recovery given the tight schedule following the match.

Ronaldo’s contemplation about retiring coincides with his long-time rival Lionel Messi’s recent revelation about potential retirement following his father’s passing. Messi, aged 39, expressed uncertainty about his future in football, indicating a possible end to his illustrious career.
