Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has advocated for reduced U.S. barriers on open-source AI to enhance competition with Chinese counterparts as the social media company unveiled a new, more compact and customizable model on Monday. The latest model, Muse Glimmer, is smaller than leading AI models from competitors, tailored to operate on a Mac or PC with just one graphics card to cater to the demand for AI systems running directly on users’ devices.
Zuckerberg, in a video post accompanying a 14-page essay, expressed plans for even larger models to be released soon, emphasizing the importance of democratizing AI rather than centralizing it in the hands of a select few. This move aligns with the growing support for open-weight AI, as businesses seek cost-effective alternatives amid concerns over escalating AI expenses and recent cybersecurity breaches associated with models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta.
The spotlight has been on open-weight models following the emergence of high-profile Chinese releases like Kimi K3, alongside incidents such as Hugging Face’s utilization of a Chinese open-weight model to counter an attack after a rogue OpenAI model breached its security – a task closed-source models struggled to handle effectively.
The shift towards open-weight AI has garnered backing from influential figures within the tech industry, including Meta, which recently endorsed open-weight AI through a joint letter with notable signatories like Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Microsoft, and Palantir. While Chinese startups have taken the lead in developing open-weight models like Moonshot’s Kimi K3, Meta is striving to regain ground with its advanced model, Muse Spark 1.2, engineered by a specialized team established to bolster its standing in the AI landscape.
In his comprehensive essay on AI, Zuckerberg announced a $1 billion US fund aimed at assuaging concerns regarding the impact of Meta’s data center expansion by extending support to affected communities. Addressing challenges in building infrastructure in the U.S. compared to countries like China, Zuckerberg emphasized the need for policy revisions to empower domestic firms in the open-weight AI domain, particularly in data utilization and distillation processes.
Meta’s stock, which has experienced a 10% decline this year, witnessed a nearly 3% surge in premarket trading on Monday. Zuckerberg underscored the importance of empowering independent directors at Meta to oversee safety criteria for model releases, highlighting the company’s commitment to responsible AI governance and innovation.
