“Legendary Cricketer Ian Botham’s Iconic Ashes Collection Sells for £225k+”

Legendary cricketer Ian Botham recently raked in over £225,000 by auctioning off his treasured collection from the iconic 1981 Ashes series. The former England cricket star put up more than 240 items from his illustrious career for auction in 2023.

As England gears up for the Ashes series this year, fans are hopeful that they can draw inspiration from Botham’s historic Ashes triumph with the team over four decades ago. During the auction two years back, held at the KIA Oval’s Long Room, Botham bid farewell to some memorable artifacts from his Ashes victory.

Notably, the red cricket ball that led England to victory at Edgbaston, where Botham secured five wickets for just one run, was sold for £20,000. Another prized possession, a stump extracted by Botham following the famous Headingley win in the 1981 Ashes, fetched £11,000, while his personal man of the match medal went under the hammer for £19,000.

The Headingley win marked a pivotal moment for the England team over 40 years ago, defying the odds at 500/1 for an improbable victory. Botham’s heroic 149 not out set a target of 130 for the visitors, with Bob Willis’ extraordinary performance of eight wickets aiding England in achieving one of cricket’s most remarkable comebacks.

Among the items sold by Botham were his player of the season medal for £8,000, England test blazer for £1,800, and Somerset cap for £2,700. Additionally, a ‘baggy green’ cap gifted by former Australian captain Allan Border fetched £13,000.

Furthermore, Botham put up for auction his England blue day one top from the 1992 World Cup in Australia, where England lost to Pakistan, for £11,000. The BBC SPOTY Lifetime award received in 2004 went for £3,600.

The decision to sell off his collection was driven by Botham’s desire to downsize, as revealed by auctioneer Tim Knight, who conducted the auction through Knight’s Auctioneers of Norwich, Norfolk.

Knight expressed, “Botham’s name carries an aura of magic, and the standout lots were undoubtedly those linked to the 1981 Ashes, famously known as Botham’s Ashes.”

He added, “I understand he is streamlining and moving forward in his life, retaining only a few mementos. Botham, a cricket legend and England’s premier all-rounder in terms of statistics alone, embodies immense on-field presence, entertainment value, and an indomitable spirit.”
