When I took on the role of Policing Minister, I committed to reducing knife crime and enhancing the safety of our streets. A year later, that commitment has been fulfilled.
Knife crime rates are decreasing, lives are being preserved, and communities are becoming safer due to decisive measures implemented by the Home Office and law enforcement agencies.
The focus of the past year has been on producing tangible outcomes rather than mere rhetoric. Targeted enforcement and prevention strategies in areas with high incidences of knife robberies have led to a significant improvement.
The launch of a specialized group to address knife robberies in seven high-incidence regions has resulted in a 15% reduction in such crimes since June 2024. This translates to nearly 2,500 fewer robberies – a substantial achievement compared to the previous upward trend. Strategic policing methods, supported by data analysis, are safeguarding communities and preventing violence proactively.
Our County Lines Programme has also achieved remarkable results. These exploitative drug networks contribute to knife crime by ensnaring numerous vulnerable youths into criminal activities, and we have dismantled thousands of them.
Since July 2024, over 3,000 drug lines have been shut down, more than 8,200 arrests have been made – including charging 1,600 line holders – and approximately 1,000 knives have been confiscated. Beyond the numbers lie transformed lives: over 4,300 vulnerable individuals have been referred for protection and over 600 children have received assistance through the dedicated service we support via Catch22.
These youths are breaking free from exploitation and constructing safer futures. The impact is evident. Hospital admissions for stabbing incidents in areas where significant quantities of Class A drugs are being trafficked out have decreased by 25%, equating to 840 individuals.
Instances of drug-related hospitalizations have also declined sharply. These figures are not just statistics; they signify families spared from anguish and communities instilled with optimism. This progress is a result of deliberate planning, assessment, and implementation of effective strategies.
We have convened experts, analyzed data, and executed initiatives such as knife surrender programs to provide individuals seeking an exit from knife carrying or wanting to assist others with a means to surrender their weapons.
Nearly 60,000 knives have been removed from our streets through these programs. Our innovative Hex mapping technology identifies localized hotspots of severe knife crime, enabling enhanced policing and targeted interventions in collaboration with local partners.
Violence Reduction Units are collaborating directly with families and schools to steer young people away from criminal paths, while over 50 Young Futures Panel projects are intervening at earlier stages to safeguard those at highest risk.
Furthermore, we have heeded the voices of those most impacted by these dreadful crimes. Ronan’s Law, championed by Pooja Kanda, whose son Ronan tragically fell victim to a stabbing in 2022, has amplified penalties for offenders and improved safeguards for victims, conveying a resolute message: knife crime will not be tolerated.
Stricter age verification protocols for online knife sales are closing criminal loopholes, and we are exploring a licensing scheme to impede the acquisition of knives by criminals and young individuals.
The battle against knife crime is ongoing, but the past year demonstrates the potential when government, law enforcement, and communities collaborate. Each knife surrendered, every County Line eradicated, and every child protected equates to lives saved and futures secured.
We have transformed the rising trend of knife crime into a declining trajectory – and we will persist until serious violence is eradicated from our communities, providing every young person with the opportunity for a safer future.
