A man has been found legally responsible for the death of his 12-year-old daughter and could face up to 40 years in prison. Brent Bredhold, aged 39, was convicted by a jury for neglecting his daughter, Alice Bredhold, leading to her death due to complications from poorly managed diabetes.
Alice was discovered deceased in her bedroom on July 4, 2024, at their home in Evansville, Indiana. It was revealed that Alice had diabetes, but her parents failed to assist her in managing the condition properly. Prior to her passing, the Department of Child Services had contacted Alice’s parents regarding her consistently high blood sugar levels at school.
During the trial, evidence showed numerous instances of extremely high blood sugar levels in Alice, which were far above the recommended levels for individuals with diabetes. The prosecution emphasized the parents’ duty to care for Alice’s health, especially considering her young age of 12 and the critical nature of managing Type 1 diabetes.
The prosecution argued that Alice’s death was not unforeseen due to the circumstances, with some witnesses describing it as a tragic but expected event. Despite previous hospitalizations and involvement with a pediatric psychologist, Brent Bredhold allegedly did not adhere to the professional advice given.
In his defense, Bredhold’s attorney contended that the prosecution had misrepresented him as a single parent, highlighting that he often traveled for work due to his job on the railroad, making it challenging for him to manage daily responsibilities at home.
Brent Bredhold is awaiting sentencing in October, while his wife, Ashley Marie Bredhold, who faces similar charges, is scheduled for trial in February 2026.
