A generous football enthusiast who amassed over £260,000 for charity through selling samosas. A courageous mother who plunged into the ocean to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. And a resilient five-year-old girl who exhibited remarkable bravery in rebuilding her life after the loss of both legs.
These remarkable individuals were among the distinguished winners recognized at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast pool of public nominations, these everyday heroes were celebrated at a glamorous ceremony in London, hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.
A heartwarming surprise followed as P&O Cruises, the new primary partner for the Pride of Britain Awards, generously granted each of the 12 winners a cruise vacation. This provided them with an opportunity to embark on a special and memory-filled trip with their families.
We caught up with three of the heroes who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean expedition aboard Britannia, visiting eight picturesque islands and indulging in top-tier entertainment.
Aiyla Mota, a Child of Courage, faced a severe health crisis just before her fourth birthday, ultimately leading to sepsis and the amputation of both her legs and five fingers. Despite the challenges, the now five-year-old Aiyla displayed exceptional resilience, earning her a Pride of Britain Award as one of the youngest recipients.
Aiyla’s mother, Eulanda, shared, “Aiyla has always been vibrant, and despite her ordeal, she has not lost her spark. In fact, she has become even more confident and lively. She’s like a livelier version of herself!”
After receiving her award from P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family embarked on a Caribbean voyage, exploring Britannia’s numerous dining options, entertainment venues, and pools.
Eulanda expressed her gratitude, saying, “The cruise was an incredible experience, and we are thankful to P&O Cruises for this amazing opportunity. It was our first cruise, and we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of activities available on board.”
Emily Greenwood, recognized for her Outstanding Bravery, sprung into action during a beach outing with her disabled son when she witnessed a child caught in a riptide. Displaying remarkable courage, she rescued the imperiled individuals from the sea, earning her a Pride of Britain Award and a Caribbean cruise prize.
Accompanied by her family, Emily cherished the cruise experience, especially the accommodations made for her son’s dietary requirements. She shared, “The crew’s exceptional service, particularly regarding my son’s needs, made the trip truly special.”
Manny Singh Kang, the ITV Fundraiser of the Year, devised innovative fundraising methods to support Dementia UK, raising substantial funds through initiatives like Samosa Saturdays. His dedication earned him a Caribbean cruise courtesy of P&O Cruises, allowing him to relax after years of charitable efforts.
Manny, joined by his family, relished the cruise, highlighting the stunning island destinations and the joy of spending quality time together. He reflected, “The trip was unforgettable, and we are grateful for this wonderful gesture by P&O Cruises.”
