Thousands of individuals in Flores, Indonesia, were awaiting assistance on Monday following a potent earthquake that resulted in a death toll of at least 68 people, with over 200 others injured and numerous homes and structures damaged. In East Nusa Tenggara province, residents mourned the victims and waited for aid to reach communities still isolated by the destructive quake.
The aftermath of the earthquake included severe damage, such as collapsed buildings on top of vehicles, shattered homes, and debris obstructing roadways. Rasyid Jafar, a local clothing trader in the most affected area of Reo, described his home as rubble, emphasizing the urgent need for essential supplies like food, medicine, and clean water.
President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia called for prayers during the Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta for those affected by disasters in East Nusa Tenggara and across the nation. The earthquake, which struck the province with a depth of 10 kilometers early Saturday morning, damaged over 4,500 homes, forced approximately 19,000 individuals into temporary shelters, and left 213 people injured, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). Additionally, 122 health facilities, 252 schools, and 84 places of worship were affected by the disaster.
