Daniel Day-Lewis Returns to Acting in “Anemone”

Daniel Day-Lewis, aged 68, has made a comeback to acting following an eight-year hiatus during which he announced his retirement. The renowned actor returned to the screen in “Anemone,” a film directed by his 27-year-old son, Ronan. In this psychological drama that Daniel co-wrote with his son, he plays Ray Stroker, a troubled ex-soldier living in seclusion in the woods of northern England. The storyline unfolds as Ray’s brother, Jem Stroker (portrayed by Sean Bean), seeks to bring him back home, leading to the revelation of hidden secrets and long-buried traumas.

The cast of “Anemone” also features Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green. The movie premiered at the 2025 New York Film Festival on September 28 before a limited release in the United States on October 3, followed by a nationwide expansion on October 10. The UK release is scheduled for November 7.

Daniel Day-Lewis last appeared on the big screen in the 2017 film “Phantom Thread.” During a press conference at the New York Film Festival, he expressed his joy at returning to acting, stating that it felt like coming back to the work he loved. Reflecting on his past “retirements,” Daniel humorously mentioned his previous break from acting when he pursued a career as a shoemaker in Florence from 1997 to 2000.

In interviews, Daniel shared his emotions about returning to acting, emphasizing the opportunity to collaborate with his son as a driving force. He acknowledged his previous statements about retiring and clarified that his decision was not permanent, citing his desire to work with Ronan as a pivotal reason for his return to the industry.

Despite his initial announcement in 2017 about quitting acting, Daniel has reevaluated his decision, highlighting the importance of working with his son in his recent project. He expressed pride in their joint effort and the experience of creating art together. Daniel emphasized the significance of this opportunity and his gratitude for being able to share it with his son.
