“Canada-US Trade Conflict Sparks Consumer Cost Concerns”

An increasing trade conflict between Canada and the United States is expected to lead to higher expenses for consumers and businesses, affecting various sectors from cellphones to gaming consoles and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Last year, Canada shipped over $4 billion US worth of electronics to the U.S., now subject to U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly imposed 50% tariffs on a broad range of goods, with particular emphasis on certain electrical boards and controllers.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would match the tariffs set by the Trump administration, resulting in inevitable price hikes as the trade dispute intensifies and jeopardizes businesses on both sides of the border.

Carol McGlogan, president of Electro-Federation Canada, expressed concern over the devastating impact of the 50% tariffs, highlighting that 90% of the group’s exports go to the U.S. McGlogan emphasized that the rising prices would affect various sectors such as residential, educational, and commercial constructions.

Evan Light, an associate professor at the University of Toronto, noted that products like gaming consoles and cell phones have been experiencing price increases due to chip shortages and supply chain issues, which are expected to worsen with the recent escalation of the Canada-U.S. trade war.

Companies like Ottawa-based Kinaxis are already taking precautions, as Chief Product Officer Andrew Bell mentioned that clients are evaluating new suppliers using their software to manage supply chains. Bell stressed that the impact of tariffs ultimately trickles down to consumers through increased product costs.

The uncertainty surrounding supply chain challenges, including tariffs, has prompted Nvidia, a leading technology company, to alert customers about potential price hikes exceeding 15% for its artificial intelligence chips. This trend raises concerns about the potential slowdown in AI adoption and deployment due to the multiplying expenses in both the U.S. and Canada.

Overall, the trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. are expected to have far-reaching effects on various industries, leading to higher costs for consumers and businesses alike.
