“Coyote Sightings Trigger Concern in Regina Parks”

In Regina parks this month, coyotes have been spotted beyond the usual confines of a movie theatre. Scott Paton, a frequent visitor to Les Sherman Park, had his first encounter with a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. The coyote, coming within about 10 feet, appeared more curious than aggressive, possibly in search of food. Paton continued his walk, cautioning other park visitors along the way. According to reports from a woman at the playground, the coyote had been seen in the area for several weeks.

Although Paton hasn’t seen the coyote again, he has noticed its scat in the vicinity. Despite this, he remains unworried, stating that coyotes are a common part of the city’s habitat and will naturally move on.

However, not all residents in the Cathedral neighborhood share Paton’s comfort with the presence of coyotes. Numerous reports have emerged on Facebook since August detailing sightings of a coyote in Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park. Witnesses describe incidents where the coyote approached and followed people and their pets. Some individuals shared encounters where the coyote persistently chased them.

City Councilor David Froh had his own encounter with a coyote while running in Les Sherman Park. Froh emphasized the need for city staff to respond promptly to persistent wildlife sightings to address public safety concerns. The City of Regina has reported two coyotes in the neighborhood and is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the animals without the use of firearms.

Froh reassured residents that while coyote sightings may be alarming, they are not uncommon in Regina. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the safety of pets and wildlife alongside human concerns. Froh urged residents to report sightings of coyotes and other potentially hazardous wildlife to the City of Regina. Meanwhile, the movie “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently showing in various Regina theaters.
