Co-op has revealed plans to open 18 new or revamped stores within the initial quarter of 2026. The first fresh Co-op outlet for the year will be located in the upcoming Willowbrook Park community in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
Aside from this, certain stores are set to reopen after undergoing renovations, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-run establishment in Ealing, London.
Expressing her thoughts on the matter, Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, emphasized the brand’s commitment to establishing local stores that not only serve as shopping destinations but also act as community hubs enriching local life.
McCrae added that the stores prioritize quality products and value for both members and customers, offering a wide array of deals and promotions on popular items. She expressed her pleasure in inaugurating the first store in Oxfordshire and highlighted the company’s strategic initiative to expand its presence in various UK high streets and communities.
In a related development, Co-op recently announced a significant investment in creating new apprenticeships. Through its Levy Share program, the retail giant has pledged £70 million to generate 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030, enabling levy-paying entities to transfer unused apprenticeship funds to other businesses, charities, and community organizations.
Since its inception four years ago, the program has successfully matched over 3,800 apprenticeships, with a significant portion benefiting deprived communities and the care sector. Claire Costello, Co-op’s chief people and inclusion officer, emphasized the positive impact of the Co-op Levy Share initiative, which has already allocated £40 million towards transformative apprenticeships.
Costello reaffirmed the commitment to furthering this cause by allocating an additional £70 million to create more opportunities for apprentices by 2030. The Co-op also advocated for the collection of socioeconomic background data for apprenticeships to ensure inclusivity and prevent any groups from being marginalized within the system.
