Celine Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris, sharing more insights into her health battle and treatment regimen. The renowned Canadian singer recently disclosed in an exclusive feature by Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune disorder caused severe pain, making it challenging for her to walk on some days, often requiring a high dose of Valium for relief.
Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that tends to worsen over time, affecting only a small fraction of the population. Its symptoms, including rigid muscles and painful spasms triggered by stress or sudden movements, do not have a definitive cause. While there is no approved treatment specifically for the disorder, other therapies can assist in managing the symptoms.
Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. This sense of deception weighed heavily on her, as she felt she was misleading those who had supported her career through ticket purchases and record sales.
Following her diagnosis, Dion made the tough decision to cancel all remaining shows to focus on her recovery. She has not performed publicly since the 2024 Paris Olympics but is determined to make a comeback on stage this September. Dion’s recovery routine involves a comprehensive approach, incorporating medication, physical therapy, vocal training, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she engages in 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming performances.
Described as someone constantly in motion, Dion fears staying still for too long, anxious about experiencing stiffness again. She views her recovery and forthcoming return to the stage as a miraculous opportunity not to be taken for granted, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and seizing the moment. Feeling strong, excited, and slightly nervous, Dion is looking forward to her Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts scheduled from September 12 to May 29 of the following year.
